Liam came home after school. He opened his backpack to find his house key. The key was not there. He felt worried. He checked every pocket. He looked inside his lunch bag. He looked on the ground near his front door. The key was still not there. Liam felt his heart beat fast.
Liam sat down and thought. Where did he go after school today? He remembered one place. He stopped at the playground on his way home. He watched his friends play soccer. Maybe the key fell out of his pocket there. It was the only place he could think of.
Liam stood up quickly. He decided to go back to the park. He walked fast because he wanted to find the key before it got dark. The sky was starting to turn orange. Liam felt a little scared, but he kept walking. He hoped the key was still there, waiting for him.
When he got to the park, he looked around carefully. He saw the wooden benches. He saw the tall swings. He saw the path where children liked to walk. He started to search every corner. He looked under the first bench. Nothing was there. He looked under the second bench. Nothing was there. He looked near the swings too. Nothing was there.
Liam felt sad and tired. He thought he would never find his key again. He sat down on a bench to rest. Then he looked down at the ground. Something small was shining under the bench. He looked closer, and his eyes grew wide. It was his key!
Liam smiled a big, happy smile. He picked up the key and held it tight in his hand. He was very happy. Just then, a kind woman sitting nearby smiled warmly at him. She said, "I saw the key earlier this afternoon. I hoped the owner would come back for it."
Liam said, "Thank you so much for watching it!" He was truly thankful for her help. The woman was kind and patient. She had stayed near the bench so that no one else would take the key.
Liam did not want to lose his key again. He remembered he had a small zippered pocket in his backpack. He put the key inside carefully and zipped it closed. Now the key was safe. It could not fall out or get lost again.
Liam walked home feeling much better. The sky was getting darker, but he was not scared anymore. He felt happy and relieved after finding his key. When he got to his front door, he opened the zippered pocket. He took out his shiny key. He put it in the lock and turned it slowly. The door opened.
Liam walked inside his warm house. He put his backpack down by the door. He thought quietly about what happened that day. He learned a very important lesson that day. From that day on, Liam always checked carefully for his key before leaving the house each morning.
