Liam came home from school one afternoon and reached into his backpack for his house key. It was not there. He felt a little worried, so he checked every pocket of his backpack again, very slowly. Then he opened his lunch bag and looked inside. Still no key. He even got down on his knees and searched the ground near his front door, just in case it had fallen out there. The key was simply gone.

Liam stopped and thought hard about his busy day, trying to remember every place he had visited. Where had he been after school? Then he suddenly remembered something important. On his way home, he had stopped at the playground to watch his friends play soccer. He had put his backpack down on a bench to watch the game more closely. Maybe the key had fallen out then, while he was cheering for his team.

Liam decided to walk back to the park to look for it. The walk felt longer than usual because he was nervous. When he arrived, he carefully checked around the benches, under the swings, and along the path where he had walked. He looked behind trees and even under some fallen leaves. After a few minutes of searching, he noticed something small and shiny under a bench. He bent down slowly and picked it up. It was his key.

A kind woman sitting nearby on another bench smiled at him. "I saw it earlier," she said gently, "and I hoped the owner would come back for it." Liam smiled with relief and thanked her warmly for watching over it and keeping it safe.

This time, Liam did not just drop the key into his backpack. He placed it carefully inside a small zippered pocket, so it would not fall out again. He even zipped the pocket twice to be extra sure.

When Liam finally walked home and unlocked his front door, he felt very happy and deeply relieved. He sat down for a moment and thought about how one small mistake had taught him an important lesson. From that day on, he always checked for his key before leaving any place, whether it was school, the park, or a friend's house. He never wanted to feel that same worried, empty feeling again. Losing his key that day had taught him to be more careful, and he never forgot the lesson.

Writing Exercise

Change the Ending

Write a new ending for the story. Keep the story the same until Liam finds the key, but change what happens after that.
Liam picked up the key and thanked the woman. As he looked at it, he noticed that the key was not his. It looked similar, but the number on it was different. He became worried again. The woman helped him search under the bench, and they soon found another key nearby. This time, it was Liam's key. He thanked her again and put it safely in his zippered pocket. When he got home, he decided never to leave his key loose in his backpack again.

Dialogue

Write a dialogue between Liam and the woman after Liam finds the key.
Liam: Is this my key? Woman: Yes, I think it is. I saw it under the bench earlier. Liam: Oh, thank you so much! Woman: You're welcome. I hoped you would come back for it. Liam: I was really worried that I had lost it. Woman: I'm glad you found it. Liam: I will be much more careful with it from now on. Woman: That's a good idea. Keep it somewhere safe. Liam: I will. Thank you again!
