A weary traveler wanders into a small, unfamiliar town late one cold evening, hoping to find a cheap place to stay. His feet ache from the journey, and the biting wind makes him eager to find shelter. The streets are completely empty, and the silence only deepens his growing unease, though he is too tired to think much of it. He walks slowly past rows of dark, quiet houses.
He soon notices a modest house glowing warmly against the darkness, and something about it draws him closer. Peering through the window, he sees a cozy room with a bright fire and comfortable furniture, along with a small bird resting quietly in a cage and a dog curled up asleep by the hearth. It looks so inviting that he can't resist. Before he can decide, the door opens almost instantly, as though someone had been waiting just behind it. A friendly old woman welcomes him inside with surprising warmth, almost as though she had been expecting him all along.
She leads him to a comfortable chair by the fire and brings him hot tea and a biscuit, chatting pleasantly as he settles in. The tea tastes a little odd, but he doesn't think much of it, distracted by her cheerful conversation. She asks his age with unusual interest, and when he answers, her smile widens in a way he can't quite explain, as though she is studying him carefully.
He notices an old picture hanging on the wall — two young men, smiling, their names strangely familiar though he can't recall why. A faint unease stirs in him, but her kindness quickly puts him at ease again, and he pushes the strange feeling aside, too drowsy to question it further.
As he finishes his tea, a heavy drowsiness settles over him, spreading through his arms and legs until they feel impossibly heavy. He tries to sit up straight, but his body feels slow and distant. He wants to speak, to ask about the picture, but no words will come.
Slowly, the light in the room begins to fade, flickering weaker and weaker. The house falls completely silent, as if holding its breath. The traveler never leaves again.
